Day 5: A little bit of Romania...

Well, more delays got us out of the airport later than usual, but everyone still had a positive attitude and already we’ve seen our first (potential) vampire. Our guide’s name is Tibi (that’s phonetically spelled, not sure of real spelling). He’s a big Romanian guy from the Transylvania area and he’s staying with us the whole trip. Our driver’s name is John, but the J is pronounced like a Y.
On our bus ride to the hotel, Tibi told us a little about the city and the country of Romania. In more recent history, Romania was a Communist country under Russia, but revolted in ’89 and became a republic. Times have been hard recently and the country is actually pushing for more people to return to the peasant lifestyle and farming because there’s not enough industrial jobs. Our hotel is the Hotel Capitol and it’s quite grand—it was used by the Communist up and ups back in the day. Our first meal was porkchops, pickled vegetables, coleslaw/sauerkraut, and a strong chocolate cake. Pickled vegetables are common here, so we’ll see how that goes, but otherwise I’m really excited. I’ve always been willing to try new foods and yet it’s always exciting. Food seems to be a fairly volitle subject with me—I either love it or hate it, there are very few things that I find so-so. Tomorrow we have a huge day, so time for sleep while I have the chance!
