Soccer Camp

On Tuesday we were lucky enough to help Chris (the intern pastor here at FCC) with a soccer camp for children (third through sixth grade). The theme for the camp: God is the Goal! We have been so fortunate to be surrounded by these kiddos – whether it’s Elijah and his goofy laugh, Jerrold and his wild stories and pants that are always falling down, Aaron showing us his many drawings, Rita and Victoria sharing their life story, or seeing each and every child smile bright when they accomplish something or get a hug from the AWOL team.

Yarizet, Jordin, Sheila and Leo enjoyed their lunch together. Amanda and Jerrold weren't afraid to show us their pearly whites! After lunch, all the kids and the AWOL team came together to try out the human knot. Tuesday's theme for the day was Building a Team, so we wanted the kids to work together for a common goal. It was difficult, but everyone worked together to unravel their knot!

After devotional time, we spent some time in the gym playing games and getting to know the kids. They loved duck, duck, goose and had a blast running around! The AWOL team felt the same way! After the kids left, we all fell onto our mattresses, exhausted but fulfilled. We took short naps and were up for a community night at the church in the evening. We got to know several of the church members, played or watched some intense basketball games, and spent some of our evening in the sanctuary. Here we listened to Pastor Gincy talk to us about not fulfilling stereotypes. It was a powerful speech that impacted much of the church community as well as our AWOL team - we are very fortunate people and some of us are quickly realizing how privileged our lives really are.
