Week 2, Day 1

Today we asked the kids to step it up. They have to take their TEFOL test on Saturday, which is the test that determines if they can leave the country to attend college. Because of this we are challenging the students a lot more this week.

Today we had them work with a partner to create a song, poem, or rap, explaining five of the eight parts of speech, using the part of speech, definition, and examples for each. Most of them turned out really good, and most of the students seemed to like what they were doing.

Being in this classroom has provided many teachable moments for us as future teachers. One of these came when we had students work on a review over commonly misused words, which wasn't as successful as we hoped. As educators we decided we should take more time and review it tomorrow. Another one of these came as we started watching Dead Poets Society today. We want to use this movie as a way for students to check their listening skills. We gave them a worksheet and asked them to answer the questions as we watched. When we stopped the movie we realized none of them had done the questions. After discussing with each other this evening, we decided we were going to give better explanations and preview the questions with the students, and then start the movie over again. Making these adjustments is important as a teacher because it allows us to help the students with what they need help with. I hope our extra time working in these areas will help our students figure out what is going on.

Students are also working on presentations about Korea and reading a book for a presentation. They have been given time in class to prepare these, and I am very excited to the results of these two presentations because the students have been putting in a lot of time and energy.
