Day 4: First Time Experiences

This morning started out a little chilly at Rockefeller center. Six of us spent the morning at the Skating Rink. It was weird to actually be at the site of another movie scene. The one thing we all noticed was how much smaller the ice rink is than it seems on TV. But, I guess that's something that can be said about a lot of places here in the city. The highlight of the skating rink--not a single one of us fell on our butts; even though most of the rest of the rink was on their own butts!

We then headed to the very south end of Manhattan island. We were on a mission to find half-price Broadway tickets for a matinee tomorrow during our free time. We found tickets for The Fantasticks tomorrow. The rest of our group was patient while we waited in lines and found out all about the various theatres and shows that appear on and off Broadway.

After our TKTS venture, we made our way over to The Bodies Exhibit. Kylie was the ringleader of this excursion, being the soon-to-be PA in our group. The exhibit had skeletons of the muscles, bones, and nervous systems. The rest of us thought that the exhibit was a little bit creepy, but still extremely interesting. The most interesting exhibit, by far, was the fetal area. None of us realized how early bones developed in-utero. We found a really small (and a really cheap) diner for lunch. The biggest meals so far and some of the best food that I've had here in the city. We're definitely thinking of hitting of that place again the next time we are down by South Seaport.

After lunch, we came back together with our entire eleven-person crew. Our first stop together was at the NY Federal Reserve. One thing that we learned was that 98% of gold in the 5-story below ground vault belongs to other countries. We all made sure not to get caught in the vault because there is only enough air for one person to survive for 72 hours after the vault is closed! Kind of a scary thought for anyone attempting to rob the place :) We also didn't realize that the monetary portion where paper money is counted/transfered/destroyed is actually in New Jersey, not still at the Fed like the one in Minnesota. Except that place doesn't allow visitors, so we were left to watch a movie over the building. We then made a quick stop at the Museum of American Finance. We learned all about Alexander Hamilton (and his deathly duel) the NYSE, and the Futures market. Pretty interesting for all of the Finance majors on our trip.

Tonight was our night on Broadway. After an Italian meal together, we went to see "How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying." I had no idea what to expect, but this show was really really good! Darren Criss, from Glee, was the main roll of J.P. Finch. The entire cast was outstanding! This makes us very excited to see another Broadway show tomorrow.

By today, we have become pros at using the subway. We're not second-guessing all of our moves or having to look at maps everywhere we go. We're considering this a success for the night :)
