While at LebeshilfeI have had the pleasure of meeting several incredible individuals. All of the students here seem very happy to see us; a simple "good job!" seems to make their day. In the classrooms we are learning from the teachers and continue to be surpried by their techniques, I was amazed to see a hyperactive child meditate and see students give handshakes and say "good morning!" before beginning assembly. I have experience working with chidlren with special needs and I am able to see many similarities in these students and the children I care for, but I am also able to observe some diabiblites we do not see in the US such as microcephaly and the effects of polio. We are also able to appreciate the work Sara does in a facility run only on donations. Materials are in short supply, especially paper, pencils, chalk and books. The teachers however work with what they have and use inventive ways to recycle materials. It is also amazing to see the teamwork from the students, they take care of one another and make sure everyone is where he or she needs to be. While we see the need for a common curriculum and great differences in classroom management, one can see the intentions of every teacher and staff member are good hearted. While working with the students, one boy has left a great impresion on me. He has taken a liking to me and his teachers have told me they have seen improvements from him since I have been in the classroom (which is a great compliment for an education student). Yesterday, the student and I wrote and traced numbrs 1 through 5 four times and he was able to concentrate through the whole task; when he finished he was so proud and he showed off his work to every teacher and aid in the room. All of the other BV students here have similar stories and cannot wait to write them down so we won't forget a moment. I miss you Lucas and Mom!
