Day 2: Pisa & Rome

The morning today was spent driving from Turin to our lunch stop, Pisa. The drive was very beautiful, going through Italian mountains and following the Western coast along the Tyrrhenian Sea (connected to the Mediterranean).

We've seen several documentaries about the famous leaning tower in Pisa, but it was so much more beautiful than I expected. It's the bell tower of the Pisa Cathedral, and the entire complex of buildings was made from various shades of white marble. The weather was beautiful, and people were eating picnic lunches, walking their cute dogs, and just having a good time. I'm so glad we visited, because it was much more impressive in person.

We were in the Tuscany region, so we wanted to be sure to eat lunch there, because Tuscan food is so famous in the States. We stopped at a little restaurant that seemed relatively quiet. To start, we ordered the "mix of local cheese" plate. Then, I had 4 cheese gnocchi (yum!). Clint had the pappardelle with chef's sauce (which was pasta in tomato sauce). We also shared some local Tuscan wine. We've heard a lot of snotty people tell us that "real" Italian food is nothing like what we get in the states. But honestly, so far, it's exactly the same, including the pizza.

The afternoon was spent driving to Rome. Upon arrival, we wandered around the area by our hotel by foot, until we decided to stop for some drinks and dinner. We went to two restaurants. At the first, we got some cocktails and split a pizza that was topped with hotdogs and french fries (they had a fancy name for the hotdogs, which were actually a German beef sausage, but basically that's what it was). We then took a cab back to our hotel and ate again in a little place right next to the hotel. There, I ordered spinach & cheese meatballs and Clint got carbonara.

Good day! Below are two photos from Pisa, plus one of our hotdog/french fry pizza. Tomorrow we plan to tour as much of Rome as we can fit in the day.
