Today was incredible! We had the students working on content that was much more challenging than before, and they stepped up to the plate and hit a home run. We first challenged them with a game of hangman using words like befuddle and plethora. They had no idea what the words meant, as we had hoped, and turned the game into a vocabulary lesson. Then, we had them silent read, in preparation for their book talks tomorrow.
The next challenge they we asked to overcome was following along with Dead Poets Society. The dialogue in the movie goes by fairly quick and the language is more advanced than these students. However, they were able to follow along with support from us and answer the questions we gave them. Their listening has improved quite a bit since we started working with them.
The final challenge we gave them today was creating a story map for their silent reading book, which they dominated. We have been asking them to work on them as they read, but many of them were not. Today we broke down exactly what they were supposed to be doing and walked them through step by step. When they had finished, we collected their first drafts and gave them feedback. Then, the students took the first draft and made a second draft, based on the feedback we gave. They turned out to be excellent! Even the students who were unable to write a complete sentence when we got here turned in something that was done correctly and made sense.
These kids ares amaing and work very hard. I'm so glad I've had the opportunity to be a part of their education because they all have potential to be great!
