We started the morning out with a 10:00 tour of the United Nations. We had about a 20 block walk because there is no close subway stop by the building. During our tour, there were five different UN countries represented; our tour guide was also from South Korea. We were introduced to how the Security Council is set up. There are five permanent member nations and at least ten other countries who are represented on the board. The primary duty of the Security Coucil is to maintain international peace and security. If any of the five primary members vetos a Security Council resolution then it cannot pass into law. The resolutions that the SC passes become laws to the citizens of UN member nations--a pretty big impact on our lives.
Our next stop was at Grand Central Station. I've seen this place hundreds of times in movies and on TV, but it was still pretty amazing to see in real life. We each had a headset for an audio tour, but my favorite spot was the whispering wall. It's located right outside of teh Oyster Bar and Restaurant. The low ceramic arches of the ceiling allow you to stand in the diagonal corner from a friend, whisper into the corner, and your friend can hear exactly what you were saying. It's like you're standing right next to them, not whispering into a corner across the room.
An interesting fact from the celestial ceiling at Grand Central is the dark patch on the ceiling. It's in the corner of the mural and was left to show how much work was done on the restoration. It's amazing how many random facts Dr. Ullerich knows about the city :)
As we were leaving Grand Central, a few of us were interviewed for the show "The Chew." We were asked all sorts of random questions about food, New Year's Resolutions, and celebrity crushes. We all need to keep our eye out on the show to see if any of us earned our fifteen minutes of fame!
Our day kept right on rolling into the NBC Studio Tour. Drs. Ullerich and Horpedahl left us all down in Grand Central and told us that we had to make our way to Rockefeller Center by ourselves. Thankfully, everyone made it on time for the tour. Two of NBC's pages, Josh and Mike, gave us a tour throughout the studio. We were able to see the studios for Sunday Night Football, Dr. Oz, SNL, and the news broadcast room. Molly and I had the opportunity to do a mock news broadcast. I was the anchor and she was the meteorologist. To put it lightly, neither one of us is destined for a career in broadcast television!
After a quick nap, most of our group headed out with Dr. Horpedahl to Harlem to Dinosaur BBQ. This was some of the best barbeque that I've ever had. And, we found the first nice waitress in the city; with five waitresses in our group, we considered this quite a feat!
Kylie and I are hoping to post a few pictures from our first days in the city. If technology works right, we'll have a few up on the blog by the end of tonight!
