First full day in London

Today was a long but great day in the beautiful city of London. To start, we had a morning tour of "London Dungeon." I expected this to be a historical tour of famous places of execution and torture. Instead, it was a crazy/cheesy amusement park with bad actors and actual rides, such as a boat trip and a free fall drop to make you feel like you are hanging to death (which it did not). But, it was a sort of campy way to start the trip, I guess, and the students seemed to enjoy it.

After that, however, I really wanted to see the actual "London dungeon," which was the Tower of London. Today our group had a "free afternoon," so the students could do whatever they wanted, but I invited them to join me at the Tower of London and general site-seeing for the rest of the afternoon, and every student decided to do that. It was a great moment for our group, who all seem to be in good spirits and getting along famously.

So we spent about two hours touring the Tower of London, which was massive and beautiful. We saw the location of Anne Boleyn's beheading, the crown jewels, several torture towers, the famous tower ravens, and several other interesting sites inside the tower grounds.

Next we all decided to visit the famous London Eye, or gigantic ferris wheel. So we took the underground to the nearest station, which also happened to be the station for a fabulous view of Parliament and Big Ben. The underground is easy to navigate, clean, and fast.

Most of the group then decided to take a ride on the Eye. I chose to skip this, as rides make me barf on everyone else, which generally makes the ride less fun. So instead, three others in the group and I took a very quick walk to see Shakespeare's Globe theatre while the main group rode the eye. We didn't get to go inside, but it was still worth the 2-mile walk.

Our evening was spent on a tour of Highgate Cemetery, which is famous for sightings of ghosts, vampires, and witches. Our tour guide was pretty terrible and we walked about another 4 miles, so my feet are pretty tired, but it was still nice to walk around London. The weather has been beautiful - a sunny 50 degrees, I'd guess.

Tomorrow is one of the days for which I'm most excited: Stonehenge!

Below are pictures of some of the graves at Highgate Cemetery, Big Ben/Parliament, and the London Eye. So far, no vampires found or staked!
