And it happened already - 4 girls in 1 room - we were bound to blow a fuse at sometime. It happened about 9:00 this morning, but the hotel was very prompt in getting our power back running thank goodness! We studied our subway map and left the hotel shortly after 10. We took the subway and a walk to Southern Manhattan and looked out at the Statue of Liberty. We then walked through Bowling Green, the financial district, Wall Street, and the stock exchange. In the midst of our walk, we ended up getting split up into two groups. It took awhile, but we eventually caught back up with each other in time to reach the Brooklyn Bridge. This is where our tourism really stood out today. We had a quick lesson in following the lines on the bridge so we could avoid being run over by the bicycles. We then hopped on the subway again (we're almost pros by now thanks to our maps) and ventured to Chinatown. I went on the China trip two years ago, and I can say it was quite similar in the way they try to get you to buy EVERYTHING. Perfume, purses, shoes, scarves, etc. Some people managed to get away with some cheap souvenirs while the others got some good laughs. We then made our way to Times Square. This is where it really hit most of us that we were in NYC. Even during the afternoon, the lights and people were chaotic but amazing. I can't wait to go back to that area at night and see just how many people will be there. After all this walking, we needed a break, so most of us took a quick power nap back at the hotel. At 4:30 we walked the few blocks to the Empire State Building and got there just in time. We took 2 separate elevator rides up to the 86th floor observatory. It was really windy and cold up there, but none of that mattered when we looked out at the view. We made it just in time to watch the sunset over NYC. One word - spectacular! When the sun went down, the city lights turned on, and it felt like we could see forever. On the way down, we stopped to do a virtual helicopter ride. I do not recommend this on an empty stomach! We all came out of the ride a little queasy and in need of food. We found a restaurant where we actually got a free appetizer because 3 of us checked into the restaurant on FourSquare (an app on our iPhones) and made it back to our hotel to rest our tired legs. I don't think many of us have done this much walking in a while, but I'm pretty sure we will be used to it soon!
